Land use and soil erosion in part of Kalama location, Machakos District
Abstract
Changes in the topography of the area were studied by comparison of aerial photographs taken in 1948 and 1972 and it was shown that although gully lengths have changed very little, widths have increased in some areas by up to 86%. The present system of terracing with sowing of grass species, particularly Panicum coloratum var. makarikariensis has not prevented soil erosion. The introduction of crop rotations with grass is recommended as ploughing would increase infiltration and possibly reduce run-off of rainwater.
