Nyambura, Tabitha
This study explored gendered access to and participation in management of forest related resources in Ngong Hills Forest, Kajiado North Sub County. It sought to identify resources in Ngong Hills Forest; assess the level of gendered access and participation in management of resources and to establish the challenges of gendered access to and participation in management of forest resources. The design employed was a descriptive survey, focusing on individuals residing in the Ngong Hills Forest areas. The study sampled100 respondents randomly while the key informants and FGD participants were purposively sampled. Data was collected through a survey questionnaire, Key Informant Interview and FGD guides. Data analysis was done via the SPSS Version 26 after cleaning and checking for consistency. The qualitative data was transcribed, reviewed for accuracy and analyzed thematically. The results indicate that a significant number of people possess knowledge regarding certain resources present within the forest and were members of the Ngong Metro Hills Community Forest Association. Disparities in the gendered approach to management were noted in that although both men and women were represented, women were more actively engaged in forest management compared to men. However, it was noted that both men and women faced challenges in managing the resources of the forest. The study noted that there was a general lack of interest among men in forest resources management. Men instead, prioritized engaging in fast income-generating activities. The study concludes that there is a need for equal participation and involvement of both men and women in decision-making processes to ensure sustainable management of Ngong Hills Forest. The study recommends that the government should take proactive measures to promote gender equality in forest management. This can be achieved through increased advocacy efforts and raising awareness about the importance of inclusive participation in the forest’s rehabilitation.

Mwongeli, Mercy
This was a qualitative study on determinants of teenage pregnancy in Webuye West Sub County, Bungoma County Kenya. The study specifically sought to explore the socio-economic and information determinants of teenage pregnancy in the study area. The study was guided by the theory of reasoned action and data was obtained through in-depth interviews, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The data collected was analysed thematically and results reflect verbatim quotes capturing and amplifying the voices of the informants. The results reveal that peer pressure, and the desire to fit in, is a key determinant of teenage pregnancy in the study site. In some instances, families are forced to marry off their girls as a source of income through dowry payment. Poverty is a critical determinant of teenage pregnancy where low purchasing power leaves girls vulnerable to sexual exploitation and abuse as they are unable to negotiate for safe sex, leading to unintended pregnancies. The study recommends the institution of community-responsive programs that will empower and increase teenage girls’ agency to make informed choices concerning their sexuality. The study recommends the implementation of economic education programming to improve the livelihoods of families, and research and programming to increase information by parents and guardians, through formal and non-formal channels, to equip teenagers with information, knowledge, services, and products that will aid in the reduction of teenage pregnancies and other sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Otieno, Mercy A
Adolescents constitute a significant number of urban populations, a majority of them are in the various informal settlements in Nairobi. Access and uptake of reproductive health services by adolescents are compounded by a myriad of determinants which act as enablers and/or hindrances for uptake. This study therefore assessed the uptake of reproductive health services among unmarried adolescents in Kangemi informal settlements. The study sought to identify the socio-economic characteristics that inform uptake of reproductive health services and to highlight institutional arrangements in healthcare facilities that determine uptake of reproductive health services among unmarried adolescents. The study was guided by two theories; sociological theory of adolescence and contemporary theory of adolescence, data was collected through semi structured interviews, key informants’ interviews and focus group discussions. Data was analysed thematically and findings contain verbatim quotes to elaborate on the voices of the study participants. It was found that unmarried adolescents’ uptake of reproductive health services, is dependent on interplay of factors both socio-economic and institutional. The factors vary from individual, interpersonal community and societal level. Level of education, peer and parental influence, availability and proximity of services as well as perceived susceptibility and severity to reproductive health concerns, fear of bringing shame to the family and self and having a child were contributing factors to uptake of reproductive health services. The study recommends a shift in perspective by parents and service providers to look at uptake of reproductive health services by unmarried adolescents from current societal circumstances and not from their (parents and service providers) social circumstances. Parents and service providers should respect and be cognisant of the right of adolescents to accurate and comprehensive reproductive health information, education and services

Lenjo, Scholastica M
Using the continuity theory as a lens, this study recognizes that retirement is not the end of
working for retirees. Retirees establish continuity in their lives through MSEs. The focus of the
study was the effect of retirees’ financial resources on the performance of micro and small
enterprises in Murang’a Township. The objectives were to assess the characteristics of retireeowned
MSEs in Murang’a Township; to examine the relationship between retiree’s financial
resources and the performance of their post-retirement businesses in Murang’a Township and to
determine the challenges of retiree-owned MSEs in Murang’a Township. The study used a
descriptive cross-sectional approach. The retirees were identified through non-random sampling
and therefore the findings of this study cannot be generalized to a larger population. The study
findings determined that there were more male business owners than female ones. The highest
level of education by a majority of the retirees was completing secondary school and the agegroups
of the retirees were between 55-84 and 85 and over. To examine the relationship between
retiree financial resources and the performance of micro and small enterprises, the chi-square test
of independence was carried out in order to avoid assumptions of normality. The results show that
there is no relationship between retiree financial resources and the performance of micro and small
enterprises in Murang’a Township. The study used non-financial performance measures for there
is no empirical evidence of preferring financial over non-financial performance measures. The
study concluded that in fact, performance measures vary depending on the individual
entrepreneurs’ objectives. The findings point out that almost all the retirees’ sampled considered
their business an absolute success even though the motives for starting the business varied from
one individual to the other.
