Effect Of African Union Activities On Political And Economic Development Of African Countries: A Case Study Of Kenya
Kimeu, Irene M
Amid raving political and economic forecasts that Africa will be a peaceful and big emerging
market in the globe, fight for power as well as chronic food shortages remain the major problems
in implementation of the same. The AU is much aware of all this and the weak links thus have
been leading to poor economic growth and at some point its coming up with mechanisms to
convince its member states to boost its economic stability. Creation of free trade area as well as
getting rid of trade barriers are some of the mechanisms being employed. Territorial disputes
associated with the treasures along the territories have led to disputes among neighboring
countries and poor mutual relationship. The study focuses on the activities African Union has so
far taken in relation to political and economic stability in African. It explains on the impact and
the effects the established activities have so far enabled to creation of a stable continent. Kenya
being one of the members of the African union has also being among the countries facing
political and economic instability and all this has been caused majorly by the poor leadership and
governance in the continent. The AU has factored in the Africa’s Agenda 2063, implementation
of free trade area within Africa whereby African states within the AU umbrella shall trade freely
within the continent. This shall ensure a tremendous growth in the global market and its
competitive trend in the global market shall increase. Amid growth, challenges have been
encountered in ensuring the economy of the members is stable. This paper explains how political
stability has led to good relationship between Kenya and other regions in the continent and also
around the globe. It shall explain on trade and economic growth in Kenya and the challenges
Kenya is facing in ensuring economic stability.

Effectiveness of Conflict Early Warning System as a Framework for Conflict Prevention in Africa. Case Study of South Sudan
Agutu, Stephen O
Since conflict will always exist, many academicians and policymakers are more concerned with how conflict might be controlled. This has sparked the creation of a number of conflict management techniques, the most prominent of which is: conflict early warning systems. This study looks at the importance of conflict early warning systems as a foundation for preventing conflicts in Africa. An example is South Sudan. Carnage has been occurring in the region ever since South Sudan proclaimed its independence from the main Sudan in 2011. The study is driven by three main goals: to identify and investigate the factors influencing early warning systems' effectiveness as a conflict prevention mechanism in Africa; to evaluate the main difficulties encountered when using early warning systems to prevent the conflict in South Sudan; and to evaluate early warning systems' effectiveness in conflict prevention in South Sudan. To analyze this study, the Conflict Transformation Theory was used. The study used both qualitative and quantitative research methods, using a mixed methodological approach. Additionally, information from primary and secondary sources was utilized. It was done to analyze the subjects and content of the qualitative data. According to the study's findings, early warning and response systems offer the chance for conflict resolution tactics to be used promptly and reliably at different stages of a dispute. The study also discovered that South Sudan's early warning systems contributed to greater understanding of the conflict and increased public awareness of it. It outlined the conflict's root causes, potential escalation triggers, the leader's complaints, the viewpoints of the civilian population, and potential conflict resolution strategies. Due to early warning systems, South Sudan's seven-year road to the end of the civil conflict was greatly aided. The agencies' ability to perform their duties effectively was hampered by a lack of sufficient personnel and financial resources, poor timing, inadequate monitoring of the changing circumstances surrounding the war, and a lack of effective means of coordination. The early warning systems' inability to effectively keep up with conflict developments and formulate accurate/sufficient suggestions was also negatively impacted by poor inter-agency coordination. As a result, the study provides the following proposal for South Sudan's policy-making level of governance: it is required to pinpoint the factors that affect the occurrence of conflict in the nation and designate these as areas of focus for the early warning system in the country. The report contends that for South Sudan to have lasting peace, it is essential to create an early warning system that respects collaboration, communication, and teamwork.

Climate Change and Violent Conflict: a Case Study of Puntland State of Somalia (2008-2020)
Dek, Abdi F
This study examines the relationship between climate change and violent conflict in Puntland State of Somalia. Using qualitative research method, the study grapples with two core questions: What factors explain the nexus between climate change and violent conflict in Puntland state of Somalia? How does climate change-induced insecurity threats affect violent conflict in Puntland State of Somalia? The study converges Homer-Dixon’s environmental scarcity and violent conflict theory with elements of securitization theory to argue that an increase in population coupled with worsening livelihood conditions underpinned by a reduced resource pie, as well as intra-society and state-society distance decay resulting from state weakness and the proliferation of arms underpin the nexus between climate change and conflict. It equally notes that climate change weaknes the customary Xeer system that has always served as a fulcrum of stability. This, therefore, increases the historical conflicts among clans based on the competition for resources and land. Furthermore, the study finds that, climate change increases insecurity as clans compete for scarce resources. This in turn informs the securitization of the scarce resources by actors in an attempt to assure their survival. The study notes that, the use of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms at the onset of the conflict may prevent the intersection of the conflict with the existing politico-security dynamics in the region. This is particularly true as traditional institutions enjoy more conflict resolution skills as well as legitimacy than the state.
