Domain Translation Of Sports And Games Texts From English To Kiswahili
Abstract
Sports and games is a very specialized field like many others in the discipline of
translation. As such it adopts a highly specialized language that is mostly understood
by the people who are interested in sport. For those who aren’t, it can be challenging,
because the language is very highly contextual, and meanings of words and phrases
are not always the same as in standard language. Sports and games are part of
everyday news broadcasts and newspapers. This content is often consumed by people
of walks of life, whether they are sports fans or not. This dissertation examines in
great detail, the nature of the language of sport, with a case study of one of the
Kenya’s best-selling sports-only newspapers, Mwanaspoti. Through examples from
the paper, the study tests different characteristics of the language of sport, and the
influence the language has on the news consumers. With that, the study laid out four
objectives, which are to determine the aim of specializing language in the domain
translation of sports and games texts from English to Swahili; assessing the the
influence of gender and age on the understanding of sports and games texts
translations from English to Kiswahili; assessing the correlation between different
variations of sports and games texts translations from English to Swahili and
determining the method of translation used by sports and games texts writers and
translators. From these objectives are derived four research questions. The questions
are tested through a questionnaire; the findings presented and analyzed using the
Skopos Theory of translation. Through the analysis, the research questions are
answered and the objectives fulfilled. In the end, conclusions are made on the
objectives, out of which recommendations for further studies are made. The findings
of the study will greatly benefit professional translators and scholars working within
different domains to improve on their work, by understanding the peculiarities of each
domain, and developing a model that helps in effective translation.
