Factors Influencing Sustainability in International Humanitarian Assistance in Kenya
Abstract
This research was carried out to take a critical look at factors influencing sustainability in
international humanitarian assistance in Kenya. The study was conducted at regional and
country headquarters’ of the Kenya Red Cross Society offices. The specific objectives of
this study were to find out the level of adherence of the humanitarian organizations to the
humanitarian assistance core principles, to analyse the value-for-money in the projects
implemented by the humanitarian organizations, to examine the attitude of the
humanitarian organization staff towards their day to day tasks as well as to scrutinize the
sustainability of the assistance given to the beneficiaries. Research questions based on the
research objectives were established. The beneficiaries of the research include: future
researchers, the institution, the researcher and the academic fraternity as a whole.
Descriptive research design was used to collect the data. A population of 200 respondents
was targeted. The researcher used stratified random sampling procedure as the preferred
sampling technique to select a sample size of 50 respondents. Interviews and
questionnaires were used for collecting data which was analysed using statistical tools
and presented using pie charts and tables. This was complemented by secondary sources
mostly books, journals and legal documents. Data was analysed using both qualitative
and quantitative methods
