The effect of business process reengineering on productivity:A case of Kenya Tea Development Agency
Abstract
The idea of designing businesses has been around for a long time and structured methods
for doing this emerged in the 1990's. With the relentless pressure on quality performance
which continues to prevail, there is a growing interest in business process redesign or
re-engineering.
Organizations have realized that to maintain their market share and have an edge over their
competitors, they have to change and improve their processes. The competitive climate and
the pace of change within and without the firm has encouraged a more coordinated and
fundamental approach to planning and design of business activities hence change in the
process.
Business Process Re-engineering is one of the arms of management which is used to ensure
firms remain competitive in its industry. It plays a key role in efficiently allocating and
utilizing resources at the disposal of the management of an organization.
The primary objectives of this study are to establish the impact of BPR on productivity and
also establish the challenges and the effects of BPR. To facilitate the study a case study of
Kenya Tea Development Agency is used as one of the firms that have embraced BPR.
The results show a positive effect of BPR on productivity. The results should however be
interpreted with the limitations of the study.
