Changes In Plasma And Erythrocyte Sodium And Potassium Concentrations In Dairy Heifers During Starvation
Abstract
The effects of starvation on plasma and erythrocyte Na and K concentrations were determined in a group of 10 heifers over a period of 40 hours. Both the plasma and erythrocyte K concentrations decreased during starvation. The concentrations of Na in plasma did not show any significant change, while that in the erythrocytes increased. The results indicate that in animals which have been off feed for at least 16 hours, the erythrocyte K and Na concentrations could show significant changes.
