Factors influencing job satisfaction among public secondary school teachers: A Case of Teso North Sub County, Kenya
Abstract
This study sought to investigate factors influencing job satisfaction among teachers in public
secondary schools in Teso North Sub County. The objectives of the study was to establish
whether job satisfaction is influenced by student discipline, to determine the influence of work
environment, to establish whether student attendance to school programmes influence job
satisfaction and lastly the influence of career choice and training. On job satisfaction among
teachers in Teso North Sub County. The researcher used descriptive survey design as a major
method of carrying out research; questionnaires were used to collect data from a sample of
teachers under study. The target population was 210 of both male and female teachers in public
secondary schools employed by the TSC in Teso North Sub County. The estimated sample size
was 138 teaching staff which was believed to reflect the characteristics of the population from
which it was drawn. Proportionate sampling was used in the study giving all schools an equal
chance of being selected in the sample. Data was collected using questionnaire and analyzed
using descriptive statistics method. Frequencies and Percentages were used for data analysis and
presentation. The study revealed that respondents got satisfied working with students who were
committed to their work and disciplined. Although their numbers were minimal they inspired the
respondents. The respondents also indicated that student active participation and subsequent
excellent performance in sports improved community perception of their productivity. They were
seen as spurring success amongst students some of whom had lost hope. The respondents also
indicated that work environment did not encourage them because of the lack of good results in
the examinations by students. In summary ,this study revealed that student discipline, work
environment, school attendance, career choice and training greatly influence job satisfaction
among teachers in public secondary schools in Teso North Sub County, The result of this
research is expected to provide information to the stakeholders in education: the teachers,
principals, teachers movements (KNUT and KUPPET), the TSC, the MOE and communities to
enable them make informed decisions that would enhance job satisfaction for better performance
among teachers and hence good results in the student body in the various schools in Teso north
and other similar ones across the country.
