The Effects Of First Language On Learning Of English In Early Childhood Development Centres In Ndithini Division Machakos County
Abstract
This research sought to find out what causes poor masterly of English language and
identify possible remedies which can assist ECD pupils to successfully learn
English. The study employed the descriptive survey design with a stratified
sampling process. The study used questionnaires, interviews and written tests as the
main instruments. Completed questionnaires, interview reports and test results were
coded and analyzed. The population under study included thirty five ECD centres,
thirty five head teachers, seventy ECD teachers, one hundred and fifty parents and
one thousand ECD pupils aged between five and six years old. The researcher
established that the first language, parental levels of literacy and teacher training
played major roles in second language acquisition. The government should
