The professional firms have grown steadily in Kenya since the 1950s. However, despite
this growth there has been widespread dissatisfaction by employees in these firms
stemming from the firm’s failure to satisfy clients’ needs. As a result, it has become
increasingly necessary for professional firms to lay major emphasis on their performance
management systems in order to remain competitive in the global market. Studies have
shown that the organisations that have applied PMS have been successful in terms of
performance. Thus, competitive firms should embrace performance management systems in their Human Resources departments.
The study was designed to determine the extent to which Deloitte and Touché management satisfied conditions that are necessary for a effective design and implementation of performance management system. The study was carried out through a case study design.
The respondents were a total of 12 staff from the Human Resources department and other departments. Primary data was collected through interviews. The data was then analysed using content analysis.
One of the major findings of this study was that most of the tenets for successful
implementation of PMS exist in the organization. The company has established a
performance management system that enhances cooperation and consensus. Furthermore, there are proper communication channels in the organization that have been established.
These findings are invaluable to the human resource practitioners as they can use the
findings as a basis of evaluating how their own performance management systems function and whether they measure up to the standards. The managers who have not established such systems in their companies should take the first step to install one so as to benefit from the merits of such a system.
