Education as a strategy for development in the 21st century

Abstract

As the wave of change sweeps across the world today, each country strives to put in place mechanisms for coping with the transformations that affect development. Kenya, like any other developing country in the world, views education as a strategy for catalysing development in the political, economic, social and cultural sectors. Evidence now exists, which shows that education impacts positively on development and contributes to the improvement of the quality of life. This paper focuses on the concepts of education and development. It analyses the role of education in the political, economic, rural, social and cultural development, while taking into account the impediments emanating from issues of policy, access, relevance and quality. It concludes that education is situated at the centre of Kenya's development and is a vital catalyst in that process. Education, therefore, can be relied upon as a strategy through which Kenya can make the transition into a strong and united nation.
