In this section on government mapping activities, we are attempting to review major recent activities at the Federal, state, and local levels. The lengthiest part is that covering the Federal government. In part this reflects the extensiveness of activities at that level, but it also reflects the fact that mapping at the state and local levels is so dispersed that it is difficult at best to obtain information. In a short volume, one simply cannot include a report from each mapping agency in 50 states or individual reports from the thousands of regional, county, and municipal entities. Here we have attempted to obtain summaries of activities from selected agencies involved with mapping at the Federal level, while an overall description is given of state mapping activities, and a specific topic, land data systems, is the focus at the local level.en
