| dc.description.abstract | This report describes a GIS based automated route selection method for a pipeline using Multi-Criteria Evaluation analysis. Good design requirements for the pipeline are assessed and suitable factors and constraints looked at.
In addressing the problem of pipeline corridor design from Lodwar to Lokichar, a study of all available spatial data for the area was made. The study deals with information extraction and representation and manipulation/analysis using digital techniques based on

the layers. Five alternative routes have been developed each based on particular aspects that were used to determine a least cost path. These aspects are geology, proximity to roads, crossing of rivers, slope and land use. The cost of the path based on each of these parameters is analyzed.
All the five layers are then combined by an overlay function performed using ARCGIS software's spatial analysis tools. Using this overlay the optimal route is determined for the pipeline corridor. This is a route for whose selection all the parameters that are considered as participatory in a pipeline route are considered. This will be the least-cost path for the pipeline as it offers the least resistance in moving the crude petroleum from Lodwar to Lokichar in terms of land use/cover, slope, water bodies, geology and the road network. | en |
