The objective of the project was to investi g ate the growth development pattern of sugar cane as infl ue nced by age and the env.ironmental conditions prevailin g in the main sugar cane growing areas of Uganda, so as t o s e rv e as a guide to improved field husbandry practices. A literature review summarized the research findings of past workers on the climatic and age influenc e on sugar Cane and described methods of nutrient foliar dia- gnosis c a rried out in established sugar cane growi ng countries. The growth curve of C042l at Lugazi was worl,ed out. Significant negative correlations were obtained bet w een growth and increasing age. The 'boom' stage or 'grand period of growth', occurred from about 5 to 8 months of age. The sucrose curve of C0421 as rel a ted to age, wa s outlined in terms of brix values recorded in the fi e ld w ith a h a nd refr a ctometer. Signific a nt negative trends were recorded b e t we en ~ / c and Pia in the 'top visible dewlap' leaf with increasing age. The correlation of climatic factors with primary stalk elongation at Lugazi, indicated that soil moistur e ( - :-), minimum temperature (+), EoPenm a n (-) and sunsh i n e (- ) were highly ccrrelated with growth. Climatic influences on juice q uality at m a t u ri ty resulted in mark vari A tion throughout the year, w it h peaks in February/March and August/September/October a n d a s teep drop in M ay correlated with minimum temperature (-) a nd sunshin e (+)
