There have been conflicting reports on the effect of S. mensoni infection on mammalian host glucose metabolism. Some workers have reported an elevation of host serum glucose concentration, while others have reported normal fasting serum glucose concentration and others have found a lower than normal serum glucose concentration in S. meneorii infection. The present study was conducted to establish the following: (a) The effect of S. mansoni infection in mice on serum glucose concentra tion. (b) The effect of the infection on the production and action of insulin. (c) The basis of such an effect in terms of the activities of enzymes responsible for glucose metabolism and the end products of glycolysis.en
