This study is concerned with the provision and use of agricultural credit in Uganda. At the national level it aims to provide an account of the main sources and recipients of credit, and of the terms on which credit is available. The major part of this account is contained in Chapter 2, although some of the points raised there are amplified in other chapters. The main sources of credit consadared are government loans scheme~ operated through the Uganda Commercial Bank and primary cooperative societies. The commercial banks are also discussed in order to (i) identify the reasons for their unwillingness to lend to individual farmers and (ii) to describe their crop financing activities. Various non-institutional sources of credit including other members of the farming community and farm labourers, are discussed in Chapter 6. The study also contains an examination of the operation of two government credit schemes (the Progressive Farmers' Loans Scheme and the Cooperative Credit Scheme) in two districts of Uganda.en
