dc.description.abstract | The study was based on the causes, manifestations and consequences of bullying in secondary schools in Kenya. The study therefore analysed bullying as one of the major social problems in schools in Kenya. The design of the study was mixed methods conducted among students and head teachers in secondary schools in Kenya. Sixteen head teachers and two hundred and forty students were sampled to participate in this study. The findings showed that both intra-school and extra-school factors are related to the incidences of bullying in schools. Intra-school factors are represented by the schools' challenges experienced in attempt to enforce rules and regulations that are laid down by stakeholders. Additionally, peer influence and academic achiever syndrome are factors that play significantly. Effects of bullying in secondary schools are manifested in many ways and include absenteeism, violence, high school drop-out rates, low self esteem and poor academic Performance. Some of the mitigation measures proposed are strengthening of Religious institutions to instil useful values and enlisting the support of the community. The study recommends that teacher-parent partnership is crucial for eradicating bullying in schools. | en |
