Technical and socio-economic considerations in rehabilitating and conserving an eroded/denuded catchment area: a case study of the Chemeron catchment area in central Baringo [Kenya]

Abstract

Soil erosion and degradation is not only a very serious threat to sustained agricultural production, but also a major cause of the deterioration of the agricultural potential of land and water resources in high, medium and low potential areas of Kenya. Central Baringo (the Chemeron catchment area) is an area with severe and widespread soil erosion/degradation problems. An integrated rehabilitation and conservation programme was formulated to reduce and eventually overcome this problem in the entire catchment area. The findings and achievements of this programme are presented together with recommendations on land use and settlement aspects.
