dc.description.abstractTraining is a very important tool in streamlining the efficiency and effectiveness of officers that are in positions of leadership. Training is actually tied closely to the performance of all learning institutions world all over. This can either be pre- service training or in-service training. It is on the basis of this crucial significance of training that this study sought to establish the relationship between management training and its effects on job performance of English Heads of Departments. The study was based on four major objectives: to establish whether English Heads of Departments have any training needs; to establish the relationship between management training and job performance of English Heads of Departments; to find out the scope of training done on the English Heads of Departments, and to establish the roles of the English Heads of Departments. Comprehensive literature review was carried out, with keen interest on the significance of training as a management tool. Issues related to the relationship between training and job performance were also highlighted. Areas that have been noted as of paramount consideration were also reviewed. These include communication, personnel management, information technology, curriculum delivery and implementation and record keeping. Survey design was used and purposeful sampling method was employed to reach the English Heads of Departments in the 40 public secondary schools. Information was collected using questionnaires. Piloting was done in 4 selected public secondary schools in Kathiani District. The results of the study were analysed, presented, interpreted and discussions made in accordance with the stated objectives. They were presented in the form of tables and figures. Various discussions were raised in accordance with the analysed findings. Qualitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme. The findings showed that these is a close relationship between management training and job performance of HoDs. The findings also revealed that the training of HoDs is mainly school based i.e. is done on the job. It is also conducted during seminars and workshops. It was revealed that KESI conducted much of organizations (such as Poverty Eradication Network (PEN) were said to regularly have trained teachers in the District. Lastly, a summary of the study was given and various recommendations and conclusions were made with a view to making the job performance of English Heads of Departments better. In view of the findings, this study recommended a more comprehensive approach when determining the management training curriculum of English Heads of Departments as well as other school managers. It recommended that management training ought to be carried out after comprehensive management training needs assessment which should guide the training institutions on who to be trained and what training content should be included in the training curriculum at any given period of training. It also recommended that schools should endeavour to train their HoDs through structured on the job training programmes such as job rotation, coaching, temporary promotions etc.en_US
