Lessons learned from the 1984/85 drought in Kenya are described in this book, with the purpose of making them available to researchers, planners and managers who will be called upon to reduce vulnerability to famine and respond to drought in Africa and elsewhere. The first part provides an overview of the 1984/85 drought and the national drought relief programme in the country. The second part of the book assesses drought forecasting and monitoring. Drought vulnerability and household coping strategies are discussed in the third part. In part 4, the institutional experiences in drought management are addressed. The final part discusses drought and food policy in Kenya and Africa. Throughout the book examples and case studies from the Kenyan experience in 1984 are cited.
