Slum and squatter settlements in Sub-Saharan Africa: toward a planning strategy

Abstract

Characterized by the rapid growth of spontaneous squatter settlements, the urbanization process in Africa differs substantially from that of more developed countries. This book provides fresh insights into the goals and nature of development of the urban sector of Africa. It brings together urban geographers, planners, economists, anthropologists, political scientists, historians, and sociologists to examine the interaction between the modern and traditional forces shaping development.
