The effect of digital content utilization on teaching and learning in Kenyan secondary schools
Abstract
E-learning is becoming a practical solution to the major constraint on teacher student ration in Kenyan
secondary schools. Digital content utilization has been adopted over time to serve as an educational
resource in and out of the classroom. The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of digital content
utilization in teaching and learning in Kenyan secondary schools that have embraced e-learning. Two
objectives were formulated to guide in the study: to investigate the level11 of digital content utilization
in Kenyan secondary schools and to find out how digital content utilization has impacted teaching and
learning in Kenyan secondary schools. The research adopted a cross sectional survey method in
investigating the different ways in which digital content has impacted on pedagogy in Kenyan
secondary schools. The study focused on teachers and students who form the nerve centre of teaching
and learning process. Stratified random sampling technique was used to derive a representative sample.
The sample comprised 80 students and 80 teachers representing 30% of the target population of ICT
endowed secondary schools in the study counties. The collected data was analyzed using frequency
distribution tables and percentages. The findings revealed some positives and negative impacts on
teaching and learning accruing from use of digital content. Learner participation, motivation,
stimulating content, self- directed discovery and enhanced understanding of concept come out as the
positive effects while inadequate content, shallow coverage of concepts and lack of infrastructure were
the negatives.
From the research training of both teachers and students is recommended to capacitate them in
utilization of available open resources for building custom digital learning resources to fill in the huge
need.
