dc.description.abstract | The basic concept of food production to produce adequate nutrient supplies is a seemingly simple equation. A simplicity which makes one of the most intriguing problems that confronts a nutritionist today. This thesis is concerned with a fundamental aspect of the problem that is to study the relationship between food production and the identification of nutrients for dietary sufficiency.
Findings reported, represent observations of Kikuyu families on small holdings under 1.6 hectares from a case study in Githunguri, a sub-location typical of the lower areas of Murang’a. observations on food production included sample yields of the staple and a study ( May- Sep) of food prices and nutrient costs of protein, calories, riboflavin, niacin, iron, ascorbic acid and retinol.
