Extent Of Information Communication Technology’s Integration In The Teaching And Learning Process In Secondary Schools In Nyeri South District, Kenya
Abstract
Use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and its integration in
education is becoming increasingly widespread. However, the progress has been
uneven across levels, regions and even countries. The purpose of this study was to
determine the extent of ICT integration in teaching and learning process in
Secondary Schools in Nyeri South District. The study was guided by four
research objectives:- to determine the extent of accessibility of computers to
teachers and students , to determine the level of teachers’ and students’ expertise
in ICT integration , to determine the ways in which ICT is integrated in teaching
and learning process and to determine the level of implementation of ICT
integration policy in the provision of education in secondary schools in Nyeri
South District.
The study employed descriptive survey design targeting 4760 students, 680
teachers and 34 principals in all the 34 secondary schools in Nyeri South District
The main data collection methods used were questionnaires and observation
schedule to triangulate responses from each other. The data collected were
analyzed using both descriptive statistics and percentages. Research findings
indicate that most schools in Nyeri South District had access to computers and
related peripherals, but, the equipments were inadequate to support full
integration of ICT. Most students and teachers had low level of confidence in the
performance of some essential tasks requiring ICT; the findings further revealed
that the extent of ICT integration in both teaching and learning is low as most
teachers and students still use traditional methods of teaching and learning in the
schools. It was further established that implementation of Ministry of Education
ICT integration policy is faced by several challenges that needs to be addressed.
The recommendations made are:- school authorities should provide appropriate
facilitation of ICT integration in the schools and in the classrooms, strategies on
increasing ICT usage to be formulated by education stakeholders, universities and
Teachers Training Colleges (TTC) to incorporate and strengthen ICT integration
training in their teacher education programs and that government and private
sector to intensify their support to schools towards ICT integration.
