The thesis topic "The Role of Small Scale Industry in
the low - income housing community, a case study of
Morogoro Urban", aims at harmonizing the conflict of
land use between small scale industrial development and
residential community. A planned community has been
taken as a well planned housing with open space, schools,
health facilities, community centre and easily accessible
commercial centre. The study is an attempt to introduce
small scale industrial activity within the residential
community, as a way of solving some of the prevailing
urban employment problems
To most people industry is unpleasant with nuisances such
as dust, noise, smoke, and smells. In terms of location
it is associated with the industrial zone of the urban
land use. The study shows that such ideas are over
generalized. The study found that there are industries
in the residential community which have received little
attention in urban planning and yet produce a considerable
variety of industrial products. This work is often
carried on in verandahs, backyards, unfinished houses,
under a tree, open space and even in living rooms of
houses. There is great danger that industrial processes
carried on, in unsatisfactory premises such as these
might cause problems to its environment if certain
measures are not taken in urban planning process.
he provision of small scale industrial estates a the
industrial area will not attract these entrepreneurs.
Their business are often closely integrated with the life,
labour and market of the community and in any case they
have not the financial resources for such a major
upheaval. The people in the community with small scale
industries tend to be owners of these entreprises. The
enterprise act as an agent for employment and a source
of income. It is, therefore, a product of their struggle
to earn a living. Most of them would like to organise
their activities where they are located at present
