Review of outcomes of childhood strabismus surgery at Kenyatta national hospital and Kikuyu eye unit - a retrospective study.
Abstract
Background
Strabismus is the misalignment of the visual axis where the image in the fixating eye lies on the fovea and in the non-fixating eye lies on an extra-foveal region. Factors that contribute to ocular alignment include arousal and good vision in both eyes. Strabismus is an important paediatric ophthalmic condition and early diagnosis and proper management of strabismus is crucial for BSV development and prevention of amblyopia. There are no studies in Kenya on outcomes of strabismus surgery.
Objectives
To review outcome of childhood strabismus surgery in patients aged 0-15 years operated at the Kenyatta National Hospital and Kikuyu Eye Unit from June 2008 to June 2013.
Study Type
Retrospective descriptive study
Study Utility
No previous study has been done in Kenya on outcomes of childhood strabismus surgery and this study will provide baseline information on the outcomes of the surgeries done and types of surgeries performed.
Methodology
This study will be carried out at Kenyatta National Hospital and Kikuyu Eye Unit. Patient files and theatre surgical registers will be retrieved and used to identify patients who underwent strabismus surgery from June 2008 to June 2013. A questionnaire will be used to collect data. Data obtained will be summarized in Microsoft spread sheets and analyzed using SSPS version 20.0. Analytical statistics, chi square and correlation coefficients will be used to describe the strengths and deviations between the variables. A p-value <0.05 will be considered statistically significant.
