The factors that influence headteachers leadership style in Kasarani Division, Nairobi province
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influenced the headteachers leadership style and its e-ffect on KCPE performance in Kasarani division in Nairobi province. The objectives (If the study were to establish the professional qualifications of the headteachers in public primary schools; to find out the leadership approaches; and to examine the supervisory style of the headteacher, and, to establish the level of involvement of teachers in the management of public primary schools in Kasarani division, Nairobi Province. This study was based on descriptive survey research design. The study examined the attributes of the headteachers' qualifications, motivational state and leadership approaches. Data relating to the factors that influence school administration was gathered through responses to a questimnaire identified in Appendix B. The research instrument was developed on the basis of thorough literature review. The research instrument contained thirty-three question items that participants were required to respond to. The questionnaire had question items on demographic variables of age and gender of the teachers. Data analysis consisted of the calculation of frequency distributions, means and standard deviations. Tne Excel software was used III data analysis. Quantitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics The study established that the respondents had attained professional training at the level of Approved Teacher Status CATS), PI and diploma in education. The study established that the headteacher found the job challenging and worthwhile and that he/she inspires the teachers to achieve school organizatior, Further, the study established that the headteacher set standards to realize excellence ani that the respondents agreed that the head teacher showed that efficiency of the of work achieved by teachers could be rewarded; and, that the headteacher together with his/her subordinates generate and evaluates alternatives in an attempt to reach consensus decisions. Finally, the study established that the respondents agreed that the headteacher shares the problem with subordinates as a group then makes the decision. Equally, that the headteacher involves the teachers of the school in the coordinating function hence ensuring that the dominant goal of the school is defined clearly and communicated. In view of the above findings, it was recommended that members of the teaching profession be encouraged to pursue further studies in order to gain more knowledge and continue to improve on their leadership and administrative skills; that there be concerted efforts through in-service training in order to appraise the headteachers with the latest skills of school management to make them more effective; there be strengthening of Teacher Advisory Centres with qualified personnel to provide competent support to teaching services in the schools in Older to realize the desired examination results; and, that there is need to put in place educational activities at the Teacher Advisory Centres which. could foster and promote participatory leadership skills among educational leaders.
