Factors contributing to vulnerability of Kenyan Muslim Youths to religious radicalization: a case of Muslim Youths in Mombasa

This study would provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to Muslim youth vulnerability to religious radicalization and to share this knowledge with the government and community members who come in contact with the youth on a regular basis, including educators, parents, and other religious leaders in order to come up with informed strategies of overcoming the vice. The purpose of this study was to establish the factors contributing to vulnerability of Kenyan Muslim youths to religious radicalization. There is growing evidence that the number of young persons from diverse locations across the world who are becoming members or supporters of various terrorist organizations is growing. This is why radicalization leading to violence is an area of increasing concern. In cases of radicalization, the most significant threat arises when individuals make the decision, for whatever reason, to' act violently based on their beliefs. The study was based on the descriptive research design. Descriptive research design was used in cases where researcher expects to have target group explain or describe certain issues about important variables of the study. The target population of this study was 200 comprised of provincial administrators, affected Muslim youth and religious groups in the Mombasa County. The researcher used a questionnaire for administrators as primary data collection instrument. For the affected youths and religious groups, the study use focus group discussions to gather information. Descriptive statistics was employed in the analysis. The organised data was interpreted on account of concurrence and standard deviation to objectives using assistance of computer packages especially SPSS and Microsoft Excel to communicate research fmdings. Pearson's moment correlations was used to establish variable relationships Tables and other graphical presentations such as bar charts, histogram, grouped frequency distributions and pie charts as appropriate will be used to present the data collected for ease of understanding and analysis. The study concludes that lack of a platform for development of religious pluralism which would provide a forum to inform the public about different religions and for them to discuss relevant issues affected the administration and the government in addressing religious radicalization in the area. The study concludes that unemployment influenced youth vulnerability to religious radicalization in Mombasa County to a very great extent. The study recommends a platform for development of religious pluralism to be formed which would provide a forum to inform the public about different religions and for them to discuss relevant issues affected the administration and the government in addressing religious radicalization in the area. The study recommends the government to offer more employment opportunities to the youths by creating jobs and encouraging job creation in private sector. The study recommends that schools should promote critical thinking and expand course offerings that sought to broaden students understanding of other cultures. Education should be reinforced. The study recommends that youth be encouraged to associate with good people. Mass media should be used to encourage the youths and empower them. The study recommends that youths need to be offered training to empower them on economic issues so as to reduce poverty. Economic prosperity needs to be encouraged. There is need to carry out training needs analyses amongst the youth so that appropriate empowerment courses could be availed to them.
