Literacy for and by the people: Kenya Kamirithu project.
This paper is an extract from Working Paper 340, entitled On Literacy Content, of the University of Nairobi's Institute of Development Studies. Community and development changes since the 1950s are briefly described. The activities of the Education Sub Committee in planning the approach and method of the Kamirithu literacy project are discussed as is their reason for working in Kikuyu language. Results indicate that literacy can be achieved by adults in three months, given good motivation, good planning and integration with other cultural and development activities.
