Factors influencing form two students in their choices of optional subjects, in Mwimbi Division, Meru South District, Kenya

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine factors that influenced Form two students in the selection of optional subjects in Mwimbi Division of Meru South District. Eight research questions were formulated to guide in the study. The study employed Ex-post facto design. Data was collected from 278 student respondents out of a total population of 236 students by use of questionnaires. Findings revealed that, the students were provided with the necessary information concerning subject choices. The information was given by the teachers and the head of curriculum department. It was also found out that gender did not influence students' choice of subjects. Majority of the students refuted that there were subjects for girls and subjects for boys, however some student respondents said that art based subjects were for girls while science based subjects were for boys. Further findings revealed that guardians level of education and occupation did not influence students in their subject selection. However, some guardians influenced their children on what subjects to take since they were educated they are more aware of the needs for job market which mostly determines what subjects are required, students aspired career and level of education influenced their choice of subjects. Students faced some challenges in the choice of subjects.

In the light of the research findings it was recommended that students should be provided with adequate information on the importance of the subjects that they study in schools, that there should be professionally trained career teacher-counselor in all schools. It was also recommended that there is need for involvement of parents in the education of their children ..

Taking the limitations and delimitations of the study, the researcher suggested that a study on the role of career teacher counselor in assisting student career choices should be conducted and another study on the role parents in career development of their children should also be conducted.
