Abstract

Universities play a key role in shaping the future of society. Research has shown that there is a correlation between the quality of higher education and the social economic development of a country, especially its ability to compete in the global marketplace.1 Apart from this, they fulfil other objectives of university education by: promoting learning in the student body and society; advancing knowledge through quality teaching and scholarly research; fostering capacity for independent critical thinking amongst students; training of professional and management personnel; disseminating to the general community the outcomes of research; supporting life-long learning; promoting gender balance and equality of opportunity for persons with disabilities, minorities and other marginalized groups; and enhancing the cultural and social life of society.2
