Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to write the biography of the late Senior Chief Waruhiu wa Kung'u of Githunguri, Kiambu District. Chief Waruhiu, who served the colonial government for thirlyyears, lived from 1890 to 1952. As shown in this thesis, Waruhiu was not an ordinary chief. He was not only an extremely rare and prototype chief that was hard to come by in the colonial days, but also one of the most loyal and distinguished participants in the colonial administration. He never spared himself in his efforts to serve the government. He was always wholly and totally committed and dedicated to his duties as a chief. As a result, his location and division were always consistently far ahead of the others in the district in many respects and aspects. That is why he acquired and maintained a reputation of being second to none administratively. Waruhiu was able to succeed where other chiefs failed because he was, above all, endowed with feadership attributes that were rarely found in other chiefs of the time.
