Abstract

A total of 105 patients who underwent renal ultrasound at Kenyatta Nation Hospital during the study period qualified for inclusion in the study group. There were 54(51.4%) males and 51 (48.6%) females. The commonest indication for requesting renal ultrasound were as follows: Inflammatory renal diseases (44.8%), Nephrotic syndrome (11.4% ), Renal stones (6.7%), Obstructive Uropathy (6.7%) Renal masses (6.7%). Indications which showed high number of normal renal ultrasound scans were; Nephrotic syndrome (23.1%), and Inflammatory renal diseases (37.4%). Patients who had their management altered wf3re mainly those in whom ultrasound showed a structural disorder e.g hydronephrosis (53.80/0),' and Renal masses (solid) (100%). These are the situations where surgery was decided upon on the basis of ultrasound results.
