dc.description.abstract | Solid waste management is a major problem in most towns in Kenya. The county governments are charged with the responsibility of management county resources including waste management; however they are usually faced with huge challenge of solid waste disposal and management. Kajiado County has no designated or licensed dumpsite. The residents have no proper way of disposing waste; the county has no proper ways of billing customers. The trucks that deal with waste have no mechanism that can track or be supervised or managed. This has resulted in residents dumping waste where they please hence affecting our environment negatively. The county environment has become an eyesore.
The prototype developed is an integral system made up of Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology connected to the PIC (Programmable Intelligent Computer) micro controller and a web based software. The system is able to track trucks and collect information related to the collecting time and area. Every customer is able to be allocated a waste bin that has a RFID tag and when a truck comes near it the information is relayed to the central system hence authority can monitor the solid waste collecting status through the system and hence generate reports which improve the process of solid waste management.
