dc.description.abstract | Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate
the factors influencing the participation of
women in the local football leagues
.
Methodology:
The study adopted a descriptive survey design
.
It
was conducted
in Gatundu
North and Thika West.
The target
population for this study was the 8 and 6women football teams
in Gatundu North and Thika West districts, respectively
.
Focus group discussion guide,
Interview schedule and Questionnaire
were the instruments of data collection.
The study mainly
yielded qual
itative data
.
This was sorted out, analyzed quantitatively and presented in tables.
Results:
The study established that participation of women in the football leagues was
influenced by several factors. Some women played football simply because they loved t
he game
and because they found it exciting and fun. Those who were students in Thika West participated
in football because they hoped that football would improve their lives in terms of keeping
healthy and fit and learning especially reproductive health. O
ther respondents also considered it
is a platform for socialization and making new friends.
Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy:
The study recommended that the National
government, county government as well as the
Football Kenya Federation
should be keen on
women football and give it the attention that it deserves in order to improve their participation in
