Listening comprehension plays a major role in understanding content in a foreign language setting. However, the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 results of the third year students of German as a foreign language at the University of Ibadan showed that a large number of them have challenges with listening comprehension. This research aimed at identifying the needs of the students of German as a foreign language in Nigeria with regards to the acquisition of the listening comprehension competence as well as proposing the new media that is appropriate for them in the Nigerian context as a remedy. For the accomplishment of this work, an empirical study was carried out in two phases; a pre- and post-trial lecture survey through the use of questionnaires. A set of structured and unstructured questionnaires were administered to 14 final year students of the University of Ibadan as well as 38 third year students of the three Universities in Nigeria where German is offered. These students are currently undergoing an Equivalent Year Abroad Programme at the Goethe-Institut Lagos. The aim of the survey was to find out the needs of the students as regards the acquisition of listening comprehension skill. The outcome of the research was used to determine the appropriate new media that suit the students’ needs. Thereafter, a teaching guide that incorporated the use of podcast was used to teach the students of the University of Ibadan in an hour lesson of regional and cultural studies. This lesson was done with 9 students and by a teacher of German as a Foreign Language. The outcome of the lecture was measured with questionnaires using Content and Language Integrated Learning and Communicative Language Teaching approaches to language teaching and learning with the aim of finding out the effect of the use of new media and teaching subjects and language skills simultaneously for listening comprehension skill acquisition. The result showed that the use of new media enhanced the acquisition of vocabulary as well as promoted team work among the participants of the trial lecture. However, the motivation level of the participants was not really increased.en_US
