The purpose of this dissertation is to focus on two aspects of the teaching profession in Tanzania as examples of modernization. These are the evolution of a Unified Teaching Service, and the evolution of the Institute of Education. By looking at teachers as an occupational group, this essay also hopes to draw attention to the use of professionalization as an historical concept
