Human Rights Abuses in Africa: a Comparative Study of Kenya and Uganda, 1962-2011

Abstract

The study examines human rights abuses in Africa and specifically makes a comparative analysis of Kenya and Uganda between the years 1962-2011. Its main objective is to investigate why human rights abuses are prevalent in Africa hence come up with the remedy for this predicament. The study is based on two theories namely, the theory of social contract and the theory of human needs. Substantial information for the study has been acquired mainly through focus group discussions and use of secondary materials. The current constitutions of Kenya and Uganda were also widely consulted. The study found out that human rights abuses in Africa are most prevalent in situations of violent conflict. On the other hand, the study found out that violent conflict is mainly brought about my unmet or unsatisfied human needs. It therefore concluded that human needs satisfaction for the peoples of Africa would go a long way in reducing human rights abuses in the continent.
