| dc.description.abstract | Environmental resources management is a purposeful activity with the goal to maintain and improve the state of an environmental resource affected by human activities. The main objective of this study was to examine the level of secondary students' environmental awareness/ knowledge and practices of environmental management of the secondary schools students. The study attempted to establish whether the knowledge/awareness and practices of environmental
management differs with students' attitude, gender and the level of education among the students. The study adopted a cross-sectional design. The population for this study was students from secondary schools in Nairobi from which a sample was selected. The primary data for this study was obtained from the students using a well-designed questionnaire, while secondary data was obtained from the Ministry of Education, population census, maps and other publications. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation) chi tests. likelihood ratio and linear-by-linear association were used in data analysis.
The findings indicated that most of the students in are interested in environment management in schools especially waste disposal, water usage and tree planting activity. The students from most of the secondary schools in Nairobi County are aware of the common environmental problems in their schools (noise pollution, smelly toilets, air pollution etc). There was noted relationship between students' class (level of education) and knowledge/ awareness and environment management with associated Chi-Square, likelihood ratio and linear-by-linear association (p, = 0.1, 0.52 and 0.83) respectively. From the findings, there is no significant relationship between students' gender and knowledge/awareness in environment management with associated ChiSquare. likelihood ratio and linear-by-linear association (p = 0.09,0.06 and 0.00) respectively. In addition, significant relationship between students' attitude and awareness/knowledge and practice of environment management were determined (p= 0.110. 0.180. and 0.28). The study revealed the need for behavioural and attitudinal change, which is an essential requirement for effective participation in environment management. Therefore, it is recommended that efforts should be made by government and school management to organize seminars and workshops for students, teachers and administrators to sensitize them on environmental problems and their
