dc.description.abstract | The purpose of performance appraisal in schools is to assess teachers performance in their jobs as objectively as possible .the information collected through performance appraisal is used to assess training need sand also in determining teachers potential for development .The results of the performance appraisal are used in setting direction for individual performance development by bringing out both performance strengths and weaknesses and subsequently developing an action plan to facilitate the desired development. The purpose of this research was to find out the existing performance appraisal practices and the way they are perceived by teachers in public secondary schools in Nakuru District .The population of the study consisted of 2892 teachers .A sample of 116 teachers was chosen at random for the study. A questionnaire on general information practices of performance appraisal and perception of the practices was used for data collection .Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Results indicated that the frequency of appraisal was very low. The working environment did not facilitate the practice and did not meet the needs of the teachers .The management was not well trained for the practice of performance appraisal. The practices did not support school development and did not contribute to improving the teachers skills .It was conclude that performance appraisal practices were unsatisfactory and that the teachers perception of performance appraisal was consistently negative.
