WiLDNet Message Passing Communication System for Mobile Phones
Abstract
Communication m developing countries is relatively unaffordable to a fairly large SIze of the
population. While the high penetration rate of mobile phones has reduced this predicament, leveraging
the ubiquity of mobile phones with new communication technologies like Wi-Fi over long distance
would provide a cheaper communication solution in Kenya. A leap benefit of such a solution would be
realized, eliminating middle-men in trade chains affecting farmers' income revenue. In the quest to
providing an efficient communication solution, a message passing Application Programmers Interface
(API) is developed to use a combination of Wi-Fi and WiLDNet as a media of transmitting data on
mobile phones. A prototype application using the above API is also developed to be used in marketing
farm produce straight from farm-gate to the market, eliminating middlemen in the trade chain of farm
produce. The developed prototype introduces to the market a cost-effective tool of trade in terms of
operational costs. This is a potential ultimate solution to affordable communication tool in developing
countries, especially in low density areas where communication is the biggest challenge to
industrialization and modernization.
