dc.description.abstractThis study focused on the development of Web-GIS for Health Management Information System that provides empowerment to health consumers; i.e. citizens, patients, their families and caregivers by enabling these citizens to have more choice and control over their own healthcare. The aim being to provide information about health services, facility location and other health related information in order to enable patients to make decisions about their healthcare and that of their families. Patient empowerment involves citizens taking an active role in their own health management. It emphasis the importance of individual involvement in health decision making. Consumerism therefore promotes the people’s right to choose healthcare goods, products and services they purchase. It was noted during this study that consumers want better quality, speedy services, more choices, appropriateness of care, and affordability of healthcare services. The web based technology employed also enabled the Web-GIS HMIS to be accessed by many users despite their location. The embedded database using GIS technology to provide users with solutions on their queries. GIS was a vital tool in providing health facility location information through embedded Google maps. The map served a vital role in equipping the user with direction information and orientation once they are on the ground trying to locate the facility especially through relating existing features close to the facility of interest as shown on the mapen
