Medical abbreviations are the main focus of this intended study. From the assumption that translation is needed in case of medical care of patients from German speaking countries and from self-experience, I noted that this translation task is not easy at all as medical findings and certificates contain a lot of abbreviations that do not correspond to those in the target language. Therefore, the following questions have been raised to research on how medical abbreviations are translated from German into English and French in order to help physicians of south Sahara African counties to access better understanding of medical documents, to improve the therapy of their patients and to support translators in their contribution to medical communication. This study shall deal with categorizing different types of general abbreviations and medical abbreviations as well as analyzing a corpus of German, English and French medical abbreviations in the field of cardiology. The study will also focus on trying to understand problems of translating medical abbreviations into English and French respectively. In the first section of this study, main theoretical approaches related to the study will be explained. The state of research will be also detailed, and different classification of abbreviations will be presented. In the first theoretical part of the study, we intend to contribute to the discussion by proposing a general reviewing classification of abbreviations. The second section will be corpus-based on three professional journals articles in cardiology in German, English and French respectively. Different abbreviations will be systematically selected and analyzed, to reflect the possibility of equivalence between them for medical translation activities. In this way problems of translating abbreviations from German to English as well as French could be highlighted, discussed and solutions will also be proposed to facilitate the translation of medical abbreviations.en_US
