A comparative study of the effects of institutional care and home based-care on social development of HIV positive adolescents.
Abstract
The focus of the study was to compare the effects of institutional care and home based-care
on social development of HIV positive adolescents. The study sought to establish
the following: the process of the institution care and its effects on social development of
HIV positive adolescents, the process of home based-care and its effects on social
. development of HIV positive adolescents and finally compare the processes of
institutional care and home based-care in terms of their effects on social development of
HIV positive adolescents.
The researcher reviewed relevant literature .The theoretical framework was based on
Erickson's theory of psychosocial development. The target study area was Nairobi, the
study focused on two main groups, the institution Nyumbani Children's home which was
based in Karen and the home based Lea toto program based in Kawangware. The target
population of this study was made up of HIV positive adolescents from both the
institution and home based-care. A total sample of 68 HIV positive adolescents was
interviewed. The study made use of systematic sampling method. The study adopted a
qualitative approach; qualitative data analysis was done through content analysis.
