A critical analysis of the ecological roots of conflict in the horn of Africa: a case study of the sudan (1983 - 2003)
Abstract
The study investigated the extent to which environmental or ecological factors. in terms
of natural resources scarcity and environmental degradation been a source of conflict in
the horn of Africa. The objective was to establish the relationship between natural
resources and conflict and the impact of these in the horn of Africa.
The research undertaken revealed that the conflicts in the horn of Africa are primarily
over resources. What clearly emerges from the case study of the Sudan is that oil is not
the only factor that fuels the civil war in the Sudan. It is indeed the most potent of all the
causes that collectively precipitated the bloody conflict. Deforestation, land degradation
and scarce supply of fresh water also stimulate the conflict.
