dc.description.abstractThis study investigated challenges that are associated to students performance in KCSE examination in Mombasa District. The study sought to achieve six objectives:- • To identify the administrative challenges that are associated with KCSE performance. • To establish if there was any relationship between the headteachers style of leadership and students performance in KCSE performance. • To establish the extent to which headteachers administrative experience affect their way of administering schools. • To find out if the level of support given to headteachers by the school personnel is related to students performance in KCSE. • To establish the relationship between teacher preparedness and students and students performance in KCSE. • To establish if teachers perception of parents support to the school is related to students performance in KCSE. The study of Ex-post facto design. Data was collected using three sets of questionnaires, headteacher questionnaire, teachers' questionnaire and students questionnaire. The instruments were piloted and tested fro validity and reliability. The findings were as follows:- Data from the headteachers questionnaire indicated that the majority of head teachers were mature aged 40 years and above. They were professionally qualified Data from the headteachers questionnaires indicated that the majority of headteachers were mature aged 40 years and above. They are professionally qualified with majority holding Bachelor of Education degree. The study also indicated that the head teachers had long service in the teaching profession. Data from teachers questionnaires show that males were more than the females thus 66.7 percent were males teachers and female teachers constituted 33.3 percent. The teachers were professionally. qualified with varied teaching experiences. Data from the students' questionnaires show that the males students were more than the females students, thus they were 57.3 and 42.7 percent respectively. The majority were within the age bracket of 14-20 years which constituted 96.4 percent with the rest being over 20 years old, There was a relationship between teacher lesson preparedness and students performance. Syllabus coverage by teachers was significant in influencing performance in KCSE. There was no relationship between headteachers gender and age to students' performance in KCSE.There was no relationship between the levels of support given to the head teacher by the school personnel. The level of tuition fees payment is significant in influencing performance in KCSE performance. Recommendations The following are the recommendations based on the findings and conclusion of the study. 1. Since teachers' preparedness was significant in students' performance, performance, teachers should be encouraged to prepare for their lessons. Headteachers should ensure teachers prepared well for their lessons. 2. The headteachers should use integrated approach in their way of leadership. 3. The schools should strive to provide adequate resources. Where schools are limited in anyway of finances improvisation should be encouraged where possible. This should be an immediate intervention to improve on performance. Arrangement could be made by the schools so that they identify needy learners financially and look for ways of assisting them through constituency development fund or bursaries through the constituency bursary funds.en
