This study sets out to investigate the impact of armed conflict on gender roles by focusing on the Sudanese conflict between 1083 and 200]. The analysis seeks to understand men and women's experiences in the armed conflict. To do so, the study sets out three major objectives. Thus: to make a contribution to the understanding on the gender concept as it relates to armed conflict by looking .u the historical evolution on the relationship between these two concepts; to contribute to ~I more comprehensive understanding 01' the complex roles, responsibilities und interests 01' men ,IIII I women \\ hcihcr as \ iciims or perpetrators III armed conflict and to offer rccornmcnd.u ions on gender policy mainsircaming in the area of armed conflict. The stud , utilizes structural violence and gender roles trumcworks as the analytical tools. The siudv reaches ,I number 01' lillliings. Firstly, in early scholarly work on feminism (\\ hich preceded gender), uud conflict studies, women were depicted as ,li\\ays peace 10\ ing while men were presented ,IS more inclined to \ iolcncc and lighting. In luct \\"~Ir \V~lS viewed as "rncns alone" business. However. in post-modern wars, this claim is not supported by the rcalitv. Instead men and women are \ ici ims. and perpetrators in armed conflict. Secondly, the Sudanese armed conllict has led to shifts in gender roles at the household, c0111111unity and national levels. Women arc now performing roles that were previously "rncns only tasks" and \ ice versa. The study concludes that warfare affects 111en ami \V0111en. For many men, an armed conflict means that thev will be forced to leave their, h0111es ,llld their families to light. On the other hand, an armed conflict muv mean that women gain access to mostly mule dominated areasen
