Antiplasmodial anthracene derivatives from some Kenyan Aloe and Bulbine species
Abstract
The roots and stems of three Aloe species (A kilifiensis, A. lateritia and A.
graminicola) and two Bulbine species tBulhine abvssinica and Bulhine frutescensi
were serially extracted by cold percolation with n-hexane, dichlorornethane and
methanol. Some of the extracts were tested against the chloroquine-sensitive (06)
and the chloroquine-resistant (W2) strains of Plasmodium falciparum. A combination
of chromatographic methods was used to obtain pure compounds from some of the
extracts. This led to the isolation of thirty one compounds which were characterized
using spectroscopic techniques such as NMR and MS.
