Knowledge and attitudes of men and women Towards vasectomy as a family planning Method, in Winam Division, Kisumu District
Abstract
This study investigated the knowledge and attitude of men and women towards
vasectomy and how this influenced its uptake at Marie Stopes International, Kibuye in
Winam division. The research contributes to the body of knowledge on vasectomy. At
policy level, the research provides more insight to the use of vasectomy as a family
planning method. The study also examines the knowledge and information available
on vasectomy.
The study applied the Theory of Planned Behaviour which questions the classical
model of Belief, Attitude, and Behaviour. The theory speaks to the concept of
perceived control over the opportunities, resources and skills necessary to perform a
behaviour. It operates from the premise that, behaviour is determined by one's
intention, and intention is determined by the person's attitude toward the behaviour
and the influence of the person's social environment or norms attitude towards
behaviour; and that specific behaviour will have concrete consequence. The data were
collected using a survey questionnaire, key informant guide, FGD guide and a
narratives guide. A total of 40 respondents, 4 key informants and 6 narratives and 2
spouses of men who have undergone vasectomy were interviewed.
The finding of the study indicates that a majority of the respondents had knowledge
on vasectomy; however, the uptake is low. This is because there is a general lack of
understanding of facts on vasectomy, due to incorrect or misinformation on
vasectomy; and insufficient documented information on the effectiveness of
vasectomy, as a family planning method.
The study recommends better advocacy, more publicity and efficient dissemination of
accurate information on vasectomy. Also that the government should formulate a
policy which will ensure vasectomy is offered as one of the family planning options;
through ongoing monitoring and evaluation of services and that the use and
effectiveness of vasectomy is effectively evaluated and documented.
