| dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this study was to establish the occupational health and
safety programmes adopted by chemical manufacturing firms in Nairobi.
The need for this study was triggered by the fact that the number of
accidents in these firms was alarming.
The number of accidents in these industries has continued to increase despite
the Governments effort to put up legislation's to safeguard the health and
safety of workers. The losses to employees and employers are enormous and
therefore a need to undertake a study on this subject.
To achieve this objective, a study of all chemical manufacturing firms In
Nairobi was carried out. The results indicated that the firms consider health
and safety as very important. They identified such factors as fire, explosions,
in-flammables as the major hazards.
The research also indicated that most of the firms have specific programmes
to ensure health and safety of its workers. These programmes included
having a health and safety policy communicated to employees during
recruitment, having safety officers and having thorough medical checkups
during recruitment. Regular medical checkups for employees were also
reported in many of the firms.
All the firms indicated that they enlightened their employees on stress and
stress management, AIDS, alcohol, drug abuse and proper health.
Therefore it was concluded that the issue of health and safety are given
importance in many of the chemical manufacturers by putting in place
specific health and safety programmes to safeguard their Human Resources. | en |
